Looking for some cozy holiday reads this season? Look no further! Here is a list of some of our favourite holiday reads.
Holiday books to read this Season:
- “The Polar Express” by Chris Van Allsburg: odds are you have heard of this popular Christmas tale, and likely seen the animated movie but did you know it was a children’s book first! With its fantastical story and beautiful artwork, this is a great read for making you believe in the magic of the season!
- “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss: this is another holiday film favourite, but the book is just as much fun! Give it a read and find out for yourself. It is full of the usual whimsical story-telling and word play that you can often expect from Dr. Seuss.
- “Dream Snow” by Eric Carle: See Eric Carle’s classic writing and illustrations in an unexpected format! His colourful artwork and simplistic writing make for an endearing holiday tale.
- “Sweetest Kulu” by Celina Kalluk and illustrated by Alexandria Neonakis: although this book is not a story about any particular holiday, it is a wonderful tale by Indigenous author Celina Kalluk about arctic animals greeting a newborn baby for the first time. It is a great bedtime read, and the winter animals make it perfect for this season.
- “A Christmas Carol” by Charles Dickens: perhaps for an older audience, and to read over a longer period of time, this book is great for learning about kindness and gratitude and the true values that should be reflected in the holiday season. Do some research on the story before sharing it with your children to make sure that it is age and developmentally appropriate.
- “The Snowman” by Raymond Briggs: this book is a whimsical adaptation of the classic tale of Frosty the Snowman. Told mainly through images, it is a magical read. The film of the same name has the same aura of whimsy as the book through its silent portrayal. Give this heartwarming tale a try this season!
